Iracema Corado
Iracema Corado, a 48-year-old woman from Escuintla, underwent surgery at Hospital Hilario Galindo in San Felipe, Retalhuleu, during Team Thankful 2026 for an umbilical hernia that she had lived with for approximately 18 years. She first noticed a small bulge above her belly button after the birth of her son, who is now 19 years old. For many years, the hernia caused minimal discomfort, but over the last two years she began experiencing increasing pain around the umbilical area, frequent sharp stabbing sensations, and difficulty performing activities that required physical effort.
As her symptoms worsened, she also experienced abdominal bloating and severe pain after meals, often accompanied by a feeling of tightness and hardness around the hernia. Seeking relief, she visited Hospital Hilario Galindo after hearing positive testimonies from patients who had previously undergone surgery through International Esperanza Project. Through visits to her daughter, who lives in the San Felipe area, she became familiar with the hospital and learned about the opportunity to receive treatment through the surgical mission.
Today, following her surgery, Iracema reports a remarkable improvement in her quality of life. The visible bulge has disappeared, she no longer experiences pain or discomfort, and she is able to eat normally without symptoms. She expressed deep gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff who cared for her throughout the process, describing the experience as excellent and life-changing. Encouraged by the care she received, she plans to continue addressing other health concerns and remains thankful for the opportunity that restored her health, comfort, and well-being.
