Why We Serve: Karla’s Story

After years in healthcare, it’s not uncommon for even the most dedicated professionals to feel the weight of burnout. But sometimes, a single experience can reconnect us to the purpose that first called us to serve.

For Karla Statema, PA-C, Team Thankful volunteer,  that moment came during her mission with International Esperanza Project and Sanford Health in Guatemala. What began as a week of service became something far more personal — a journey of connection, gratitude, and renewed purpose.

"For several years, I’ve been carrying a sense of burnout. The weight of COVID and its aftermath has been heavy in healthcare, and after nearly 26 years as a physician assistant, there have been moments where I’ve felt unseen and unappreciated. Being chosen for this mission trip shifted something in me—it made me feel seen, valued, and reminded me why I chose this path in the first place.

From the very beginning, our team came together in a way that felt rare and genuine. People from across the Sanford enterprise—different states, different backgrounds—yet we connected instantly. We worked side by side, overcoming challenges, supporting one another, and providing care that truly mattered. What started as a group of colleagues quickly became something more. I know these friendships will last a lifetime.

And then there were the people of Guatemala. Their spirit, their light, their deep sense of gratitude—it’s something I will carry with me always. Despite so much, they radiate joy and resilience in a way that is both humbling and inspiring.

Leaving Reu on Friday morning, my heart was already full. I thought I understood the depth of what this trip had given me. But the day unfolded in ways I never expected. The opportunity to simply be present—to “stove,” to connect personally with the people and children—was the perfect ending. It wasn’t about medicine in those moments; it was about humanity, connection, and shared joy.

If you were there, you know that I spent a good portion of that day in tears—overcome by emotions that are still hard to fully describe. It was gratitude, humility, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose all at once.

I keep coming back to a quote that has always resonated with me: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” —Mahatma Gandhi. As I reflect on this experience, I feel like, in some small way, I was able to live out that mantra.

I will never be able to fully express my gratitude to Sanford Health and the International Esparza Project for giving me this opportunity. It was more than a trip—it was a gift that has left a lasting imprint on my heart."

Sincerely... Karla Statema PA-C
