Aldo’s Art of Restoring Confidence
During Team Hope 2026, care took many forms.
Among the healthcare professionals who joined our Impacting Health team in Retalhuleu was Aldo, an ocular prosthetics specialist from Mexico whose work combines remarkable craftsmanship, precision, and compassion.
Aldo creates each ocular prosthesis individually. He carefully studies the patient's eye, matching its color, shape, and smallest details before hand-painting the prosthesis to make it look as natural as possible.
But what he creates goes far beyond appearance.
For many of the patients Aldo met during Team Hope, losing an eye had changed not only how they saw the world, but also how they felt the world saw them.
One patient had lost an eye after an accident while working in construction. Since then, he had worn sunglasses to hide the injury because he felt self-conscious about his appearance.
During Team Hope, Aldo was able to create a prosthesis designed specifically for him, carefully matching the color and details of his other eye.
For other patients, the circumstances were very different. Some of the young patients Aldo met had lost both eyes as a result of cancer. For them, receiving their prosthetics became a moment where their personalities could shine through.
One little girl had a very specific request.
She wanted blue eyes.
And when her consultation was over, she proudly announced that she had won. Every girl at school, she said, was going to be jealous of her new blue eyes.
It was a small moment filled with the confidence and excitement of a child who wasn't focused on what she had lost. She was thinking about what she couldn't wait to show her friends.
Throughout the week, Aldo brought that same level of care to every patient he met. Each prosthesis required patience and extraordinary attention to detail, but also an understanding of the person who would ultimately wear it.
His work was a beautiful example of what Impacting Health can look like.
Sometimes healthcare means a diagnosis or a procedure. Sometimes it means relieving pain or restoring function. And sometimes, it means helping someone look in the mirror and feel more like themselves again.
We are grateful to Aldo for bringing his talent from Mexico to Guatemala and sharing it with our patients during Team Hope 2026.
Through his hands, artistry became care, and for several of our patients, a new eye brought something equally meaningful: a renewed sense of confidence.
