VISITING HOMES AND THE HUGE NEED FOR SMOKE-FREE STOVES AND WATER FILTERS

This November, we conducted home visits throughout the rural communities surrounding Tecpán, Guatemala, to better understand the living conditions faced by local families. What we witnessed was both eye-opening and heartbreaking. Many families lived in small, overcrowded homes with dirt floors, limited ventilation, and few resources to meet their daily needs. These visits revealed an urgent need for interventions that could improve both health and quality of life.

One of the most concerning challenges was the widespread use of open-fire cooking inside the homes. Families prepared meals over traditional wood-burning fires, often in enclosed spaces where smoke filled the rooms throughout the day. Women and children, who spent the most time near the cooking areas, were particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of indoor air pollution. The smoke caused respiratory problems, eye irritation, and other health issues that impacted the well-being of entire families.

As we listened to the stories of the families and observed their living conditions firsthand, it became clear that our smoke-free stove and water filter program could make a significant difference. A simple stove installation would not only reduce exposure to dangerous smoke but also create a safer, cleaner, and more efficient cooking environment. These visits strengthened our commitment to expanding the program and bringing hope to families whose greatest desire was a healthier home for their children and future generations.
